Digital Elevation Model

Nationwide elevation dataset

The Digital Elevation Model describes height above sea level. It is the most accurate nationwide material on elevations. The Elevation Model is calculated from the contour lines and coastline elements of the basic map by triangulation network interpolation into a grid model where the grid cell size is 25x25 m.

Many fields of application

Using the digital Elevation Model, it is possible to simulate e.g. TV and radio reception areas or cellular phone signal coverage. Mass calculations for excavation and infill areas can be estimated quickly in advance. Inclination and profiles can also be calculated easily. There are many applications, for instance in geology, geography and forestry. It is now possible to calculate a digital orthophoto for any location in Finland. The dataset can also be processed into graphic map products. Elevation coordinates for geographical data can also be calculated on the basis of the digital Elevation Model.

Different pixel sizes

In addition to the 25-m pixel (square) size, the dataset from the digital Elevation Model is also available in 200-m pixel size, calculated from the 25-m pixel data. The dataset is updated when the elevation information in the Topographic Database is updated. The 250-m pixel dataset is still available in Rodika format, but this is no longer updated. The Elevation Model is supplied in a uniform coordinate system.
