Control points and benchmarks

The NLS benchmark register contains information about control points and bench-marks. Most of these horizontal control points and levelling benchmarks are measured by the NLS. Some benchmarks measured by other agencies are also included.

Benchmarks are determined by spirit levelling. Horizontal control points are measured by satellite surveying. This technique has replaced the old method of triangulation. The horizontal coordinate system used is called kkj and the height system is N60.

Within the NLS, control surveys are carried out by Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia District Survey Offices. They are also responsible for maintaining the system of horizontal control points and benchmarks in their operating areas. The units also provide expert and measurement services related to geodetic measurements and coordinate and height systems.
