Product descriptions

Background map series is a data set product series in raster format that depicts the whole of Finland and that is meant for web use as a background material for theme data. Its key objects are road names, roads and railways, addresses for buildings (from the Population Register Centre), buildings and con-structions, administrative borders, geographical names, waterways and land use.

The positional accuracy of Background map series corresponds to that of scales 1:10 000 - 1:8 000 000. Background map series comprises background map rasters the scales of which are 1:5 000, 1:10 000, 1:20 000, 1:40 000, 1:80 000, 1:160 000, 1:320 000, 1:800 000, 1:2 million, 1:4 million and 1:8 million.

Background map raster 1:5 000 is updated four times a year. Background map raster 1:10 000 and 1:20 000 are updated two times a year. Background map raster 1:40 000, 1:80 000, 1:160 000, 1:320 000, 1:800 000, 1:2 million, 1:4 million and 1:8 million are updated once a year.

Background map series is available in file format as a version that covers the whole country and as a version that covers all the background map rasters. It is also possible to acquire separate background map rasters that cover the whole country or that cover particular areas.

Background map series is available via the service interface.

The cadastral registry which is kept by the National Land Survey and a little over 70 municipalities (local detailed plan areas only) is one of the basic registries of our society. In the cadastral registry, which covers the entire area of the country, independent units of land ownership, i.e. properties and other registry units and transfers of unseparated parcels and interests in joint property units, have been individualised.

The cadastral registry location data is presented on the cadastral index map, which shows property and other register unit boundaries, boundary markers and property identifiers. See also Cadastral index map raster.

The Land Information System of Finland contains attribute data related to property. Further information: http://www.maanmittauslaitos.fi/en/real-property-24

The Cadastral index map is available on the service interface.

The geographic names products comprise of place name products and map name products.

The place name dataset comprises approximately 800 000 natural and cultural names whose spelling has been checked by the Institute for the Languages of Finland. In addition to the correct spelling of place names, the dataset provides the following particulars: the language of the name (Finnish, Swedish, North Saami, Inari Saami or Skolt Saami), the status of the language of the name in the municipality in which the place is located and the type of place the name refers to. The location of the place is given as coordinates that indicate the midpoint of the place (in case of rivers, the coordinates point to the mouth of the river). In case of a place name dataset, each place and its name or names appear only once.

The map name dataset is comprised of the place names selected for different map products and the information for their cartographic presentation. In addition to the data available in the place name dataset, the map name dataset includes the location of the place name on map, its direction and its typographical information, such as typeface and type size. In case of map names, the name of a particular place, such as a river, can appear several times within the same product (i.e. map scale).

Place names and map names are available in file format on scales 1:25 000, 1:50 000, 1:100 000, 1:250 000, 1:500 000, 1:1 million., 1:2 million, 1:4,5 million and 1:8 million. The files are GML files equivalent to the service interface products of the Geographic Names Service (WFS).

The geographic names datasets are available as files covering the whole of Finland.

The geographic names products are available on the service interface: Geographic Names Service (WFS) http://www.maanmittauslaitos.fi/aineistot-palvelut/rajapintapalvelut/nimiston-kyselypalvelu-wfs (in Finnish).

Laser scanning data refers to three-dimensional point-like data depicting the ground and objects on the ground. Each point is provided with x, y and z coordinate information. Laser scanning data is collected i.a. in order to produce an accurate nationwide 2 m elevation model. Currently laser scanning data is available only from certain parts of Finland. The data can be acquired as versions that are restricted by area and in which the laser scanning points are classified either automatically or with the help of stereo models.
There is no updating scheme for the data set.

Laser scanning data is not available on the service interface.

Aerial photographs are either images taken with an analogue camera and stored on film or uninterpreted aerial photos in raster format taken with a digital sensor. The images are vertical photographs portraying the terrain and applicable to be used in mapping. Aerial photographs are updated every 3 to 10 years. Aerial photos are available in black-and-white, colour and infrared depending on the camera used for photographing. The size and accuracy of aerial photos depend on the camera, photography scale and altitude or ground sample distance (GSD).

NLS aerial photographs are not available on the service interface.
