The National Land Survey collects topographic data from the entire country. Our datasets contain, for example, place names, roads, buildings, waterways, fields, topographic features and elevations as well as administrative boundaries.
The road network and geographic names are updated continuously, the administrative borders and the buildings yearly and the other elements approximately every 5–10 years.
Our topographic data is available as themes and as products containing all topographic data. Product descriptions contain additional information about different topographic data products.
Using topographic data
All of our topographic data is open data. It may be freely copied, distributed and published. It may be processed and utilised for commercial purposes and used as part of applications or services.
How to acquire topographic data
There are several different ways to acquire topographic data depending on your needs: by downloading as a self-service from the web, by placing an order or by acquiring data directly to your own application via an interface.
Our data can be used free of charge. If you acquire our data by placing an order, there is a processing and handling charge. If you acquire data via an interface, there is a charge for maintenance costs.
The File service of open data is a self-service for downloading data. You can choose the data you want and select its format and coordinate system, as well as the area the data covers. You will receive a link from the service that you can use to download the topographic data you have selected. This service is free of charge.
If you repeatedly need large amounts of laser scanning data or aerial photographs, you can download the data via the directory user interface.
You need to place a separate order if:
- The data is not available via the File service of open data.
- You need the data on a CD or hard drive.
- You need large amounts of data, such as aerial photographs covering all of Finland.
Orders are subject to a handling and processing charge.
Interface services for applications
You can use our interface services to download topographic data into your own information system. To use our interface services, you need an application that is capable of requesting and downloading selected data from the National Land Survey's server.
You need a contract to use our interface services. It is possible to try our services before signing the contract. We charge maintenance costs for the use of interface services. The data can be acquired free of charge via our interface services.
