Professor Markku Poutanen will retire on 1 December 2023. He started at the Geodetic Institute in 1985 as a researcher, then as a specialist researcher and from 2001 to 2019 he was the head of the Department of Geodesy. In the years 2019-2023, he served as the Secretary General of the International Association of Geodesy.

Five decades have accommodated everything, and the environment and tasks have also changed. Markku tells about the coincidences that brought an astronomer to the Geodetic Institute, what the Geodetic Institute was like 35 years ago and what has happened over the decades. Oh, and of course, what the heck is astrogeodesy?

The monthly FGI Research Seminar is a platform, where researchers from FGI and visiting researchers present their findings. The event is open for everyone, and no registration is needed. You can attend the seminar remotely or in the Vuorimiehentie 5 auditorium, which is located at the ground floor. The presentations are given in English.
