The European Association of National Metrology Institutes EURAMET evaluates the quality systems of national standards laboratories every five years. There are over one hundred metrology laboratories in Europe. EURAMET monitors the conformity of the laboratories and conducts a thorough evaluation every five years. This year, the Finnish metrology institutes were in turn.
The national metrology institute VTT MIKES and five designated institutes–Aalto University, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finnish Environment Institute, Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, and Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) at the National Land Survey of Finland–were evaluated. Metrological activities in all these institutes meet the international requirements, which was acknowledged in EURAMET’s recent Technical Quality Committee meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Calibration certificates written by the six Finnish institutes are still accepted worldwide.
At the FGI, the Department of Geodesy and Geodynamics performs calibrations as a national standards laboratory. Services include absolute and relative gravity measurements, system calibration of precise levelling equipment, calibration of electronic distance measurement instruments and measurements of geodetic baselines and test fields.
