The place name search in the MapSite service will now give you more information about the place you search. Browse the search results and select the place whose details you wish to see. The map shows the location of the place and an information box with more details.
The information box includes a link to the information card of the place, which leads you to the Information Cards for Geographic Names service to view the place’s details. The information card includes the place’s alternative names, type, coordinates and height above sea level.
The Information Cards for Geographic Names service retrieves the information for places from the NLS Geographic Names Register. The register contains information about more than 800,000 named places and their names. These named places include cities, villages, transport sites, waterbodies, hills and other such named objects.
