FGI has conducted geodetic measurement campaigns at the Finnish Antarctic station Aboa since its establishment in 1989. In January 2024 FGI’s Research Manager Jyri Näränen and Research Scientist Arttu Raja-Halli joined the FINNARP23 expedition to Aboa to continue the absolute gravity measurements for monitoring the postglacial uplift as well as the current ice mass change. In the seminar, Arttu will present preparation for the expedition, daily routines, and work at the station as well as some preliminary results.

During the expedition the permanent geodetic infrastructure at Aboa was strengthened by installing two corner retroreflectors for Sentinel-1 calibration and to improve data validation. In addition, the static GPS-receiver at Aboa was upgraded to a modern GNSS-receiver to continue the over two-decade long time series of the crustal movement monitoring at Aboa. The new infrastructure together with the absolute gravity measurements will improve the accuracy of the satellite measurements of the crustal movements and estimates on the ice mass changes around Aboa.

The monthly FGI Research Seminar is a platform, where researchers from FGI and visiting researchers present their findings. The event is open for everyone, and no registration is needed. You can attend the seminar remotely or in the Vuorimiehentie 5 auditorium, which is located at the ground floor. The presentations are given in English.
