Welcome to the first FGI Seminar of the autumn, where Dr. Ville Lehtola Assistant Professor of the University of Twente will give a presentation about advanced sensor fusion for 3D perception.

Sensor fusion brings benefits in robustness and enhanced performance, which are needed for increased autonomy and uncrewed systems (UGV/USV/UAV). These systems require a situational awareness of their surroundings. Advanced sensor fusion consists of the use of AI techniques, especially deep learning, in contrast to previous techniques. In the presentation, the current approaches how to fuse lidar, camera, and other sensor data are discussed.

Ville Lehtola received the Doctor of Science (Technology) degree in Computational Engineering from Aalto University, Espoo, Finland, in 2010. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Academy of Finland from 2012 to 2015. Subsequently, he worked as a Senior Scientist at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI). Since 2019, he has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, and also holds the title of Associate Professor in Computational Science at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. His research interests include multi-sensor fusion and machine intelligence for robot perception, cognition, and navigation problems, including those related to UGVs, USVs, and UAVs. Related to BIM and digital twin applications, he was city councillor 2009-2017 in Espoo, Finland, one of the top sustainable cities in Europe. Currently, he is in NATO SPS independent scientific evaluation group (ISEG).

The monthly FGI Research Seminar is a platform, where researchers from FGI and visiting researchers present their findings. The event is open for all, and no registration is needed. You can attend the seminar via Teams or at Vuorimiehentie 5 auditorium, which is located at the ground floor. The presentations are given in English.
