Geospatial data promotes economic growth and is a critical part of overall security

Geospatial data are data that include a geographical location.  They are the foundation of a functioning society and economy. The National Land Survey of Finland produces and maintains comprehensive geospatial data sets, maps, aerial photographs and laser scanning data.

The importance of geospatial data often emerges when it is not available. Geospatial data is what helps emergency vehicles find their way, for example. This is why it is an essential part of basic social infrastructure, the functionality of which must be ensured.

Geospatial data accelerate digitalisation and business operations

The National Land Survey of Finland produces and maintains open geospatial data, which provide significant economic benefits and allow companies and the public sector remain cost-effective. Geospatial data is an essential part of digitalisation and robotisation, such as in smart traffic.

The global value of the geospatial data and positioning market is estimated (in Finnish) to rise to EUR 1,190 billion by 2030, compared with an estimated EUR 570 billion in 2025.

The National Land Survey of Finland helps companies innovate:

  • by making geospatial data easy to use;
  • by supporting the interoperability of geospatial data;
  • by developing and testing new solutions with companies; and
  • by conducting basic research in positioning, laying the foundation for new technologies and innovations.

The National Land Survey of Finland’s geospatial datasets are critical for overall security and the security of supply

The National Land Survey of Finland produces geospatial datasets that:

  • enable up-to-date and reliable situational awareness for preparedness and crisis management;
  • support society in flood management and disruptions to critical infrastructure, among others;
  • meet the requirements of the Finnish Defence Forces and NATO; and
  • are a part of digital security of supply that cannot be outsourced to the market or left to commercial operators.
  • The National Land Survey of Finland maintains the national Finnref positioning station network and supports the European Galileo positioning system, which provide the basic infrastructure for spatial data and positioning.

Reliable spatial data lays the foundation for decision-making

Finland is a pioneer in public information management, and the accurate, open and reliable geospatial data produced by the National Land Survey of Finland are the key foundation of our strength. Independent official information provides a common and reliable foundation on which to base decision-making in different administrative branches and levels.

Thousands of citizens, experts and authorities use our geospatial services every day. Our map and geospatial services see billions of searches every year.

Geospatial data is widely used in Finland:

  • to monitor the state of the environment;
  • to adapt to climate change; and
  • to help municipal decision-making, such as urban planning and land use.

Up-to-date and comparable geospatial data allows decision-makers to make decisions that have sustainable impacts on the environment, the economy and the everyday lives of the citizens.
