BiodiLogDef - Towards more Biodiverse and Efficient Logging and Defence Operations
Towards more Biodiverse and Efficient Logging and Defence Operations (BiodiLogDef) project is a Co-innovation joint project funded by Business Finland, involving several company partners. The project is a part of the Ponsse-Epec FORWARD’27 Business Finland Locomotive Ecosystem and linked to Patria eALLIANCE Business Finland Locomotive Ecosystem. Research partners are the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), the University of Turku (UTU), Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI).
The main objectives of the project are by work package (WP):
WP1:
• Improve methods for measuring and identifying forest biodiversity indicators using advanced sensor technologies and the latest artificial intelligence (AI) methods.
• Create capabilities to build advanced calculation and production of forest biodiversity indexes for Finnish forests and globally.
WP2:
• Combine available open data with information produced by new sensor technologies and AI, thereby improving the quality of soil information.
• Produce dynamic soil maps and predictive, dynamic trafficability models that take into account the characteristics of the vehicle and its equipment, and the terrain and environment conditions.
WP3:
• Develop GNSS-denied positioning and 3D/AR-based visualization for machines and vehicles and further assist the operator, driver and commander in their decision-making when planning and implementing the most optimal route in logging and defence operations.
• Create capabilities to build optimization algorithms and optimized route networks by combining soil, trafficability and biodiversity information and machine learning.
The BiodiLogDef project will be implemented between May 2026 and October 2028. The project is coordinated by UEF.
