ForestGrowth - Forest Growth Measurement and Modelling from Multisource Laser Scanning Time Series

Tree growth models are a key starting point in predicting and monitoring forest development. ForestGrowth combines multi-temporal terrestrial and airborne laser scanning data with Functional–Structural Plant Models (FSPMs) to benchmark and refine forest growth models using empirically rich, realistic datasets. The project will establish standardized workflows for forest growth monitoring, improve accuracy of tree-level growth measurements, and provide new insights into carbon allocation and structural adaptation. We demonstrate new techniques based on both modelling and accurate measurements for the country-level tree growth assessment using second and third national laser scanning data sets in Finland. Ultimately, ForestGrowth will create a new foundation for mechanistic forest growth modelling and measurement, enhancing the scientific basis of carbon cycle predictions and advancing operational forestry toward more sustainable and data-driven practices
