It is good to exactly know the plot boundaries. For example, starting a new building project and renovating a yard often require that the plot boundaries are known.
How do you recognise the plot boundaries?
A boundary marker on the plot shows the exact boundary. A boundary marker can be, for example, a large stone or rock, a concrete block, or a metal pipe called pipe marker. On the boundary marker, there is a number which is also shown on the map. The National Land Survey has determined exact coordinates for the boundary marker.
The NLS e-service provides you information about property boundaries
You can look at plot boundaries and information about boundary markers in the NLS e-service (in Finnish and Swedish).
If you want to look at the boundaries of your own property, go to Omat kiinteistöt and huoneistot (My properties and apartments) and select the property whose boundaries you want to see. After that, select on the map the boundary marker whose information you want to look at.
If you want to look at the boundaries of a property owned by someone else, select Kaikki kiinteistöt ja huoneistot (All properties and apartments). You can search for a property either with the property identifier or by selecting the property on the map.
The boundary marker information shows an estimated positional accuracy. Only the information from measurements made in the last few years is certain. The boundary marker information contains the remark “Tietoja ei ole tarkistettu (The information has not been checked)”, if the boundary marker’s location has not been verified in the last few years. The location of such boundary markers may be inaccurate.
If you cannot find the boundary markers, apply for a boundary demarcation
If you cannot find the boundary markers or the boundaries are unclear, you can apply for a boundary demarcation from the National Land Survey (in Finnish and Swedish). In the boundary demarcation, the location of the boundary is investigated and boundary markers are renewed if necessary.
The boundary demarcation is subject to a charge. The fee for the boundary demarcation is usually split evenly between the owners of the adjoining properies. It would be good to talk to your neighbour, if possible, before applying for a boundary demarcation. Your neighbour may know the location of the boundary or the boundary marker.
