The benefits of combining geospatial data and artificial intelligence extend to almost all sectors, such as agriculture and forestry, transport, construction and healthcare. Thus, understanding the fundamentals of GeoAI also provides insight into broader societal and global trends.
The Location Innovation Hub, coordinated by the National Land Survey of Finland, has published two online courses that introduce the use of GeoAI. The courses are designed for different levels of expertise. The basic course is suitable for business leaders and decision-makers, while the advanced course is suitable for spatial data or artificial intelligence experts and other technical experts. The courses are in English and free of charge.
The basic course was published in June, and the supporting advanced course in October 2025. The courses already have a total of almost 400 participants enrolled from all over the world.
International expertise and cooperation
The expertise of the National Land Survey of Finland and the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) has played a key role in the development of these courses. In addition, experts from universities and businesses, both in Finland and internationally, have participated extensively in the production.
The courses have been published in the Location Innovation Academy, a learning platform maintained by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).
”Advanced AI and geospatial technologies are rapidly converging, creating new opportunities for innovation. This second course in Location Innovation Hub's GeoAI series provides a valuable learning resource for geospatial professionals wanting to stay ahead of this fast-evolving field by providing practical examples of its application,” explains Nigel Edmead, Senior Director of Learning at OGC.
