GeoFuture – Future needs for national geodetic reference systems

In Finland, there are three national geodetic reference systems: the EUREF‑FIN coordinate system, the N2000 height system, and the FOGN gravity system. In addition, a comparable element is the national geoid model FIN2023N2000, which serves as a transformation surface between EUREF‑FIN coordinates and N2000 heights. The project studies whether the current geodetic reference systems meet users’ needs and what kinds of development requirements are associated with them.

In particular, the aim is to understand the experiences of municipalities, cities, public authorities, and companies in using these systems. Another objective is to identify new requirements related to technological development so that the evolution of the reference systems can be guided based on research evidence. The study is based on a literature review and a survey, and its goal is to produce knowledge to support the development of geodetic reference systems.
