EQUIP-G - European Quantum Infrastructure Project for Gravimetry

logo

The EQUIP-G project brings together 20 partners from 11 European countries to test, develop, and implement a European quantum gravimeter network. The goal is to strengthen the EU’s autonomy and competitiveness while improving the availability of quantum gravimetry instruments and community building across Europe.

As quantum technology advances, quantum gravimeters provide increasingly precise measurements of mass variations at different altitudes, enhancing our understanding of Earth's internal dynamics and supporting strategic decisions in energy and environmental management.
In this project, the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) will acquire a quantum gravimeter as part of the European network of instruments. This device will be deployed across Europe and serve in various use cases.

FGI is responsible for the test in Iceland, which monitors gravitational variations in a geothermal field over a three-month period. The test is conducted every autumn throughout the project. In the final year, measurements will expand to Greenland in collaboration with DTU Space. Additionally, FGI ensures the metrological traceability of all instruments used in the project. Furthermore, we will organize two extensive gravimeter comparisons in Paris. In these comparisons, FGI’s absolute gravimeter FG5X-221 will serve as one of the key reference instruments linking the study to both European and international comparisons.
