The changing climate allows southern weeds to thrive in northern regions. New harmful weeds have spread to Finland, necessitating actions to prevent their spread and develop control measures. This project investigates the pathways through which new harmful weed species spread to Finland, their distribution, and control methods.

The pathways are examined using seed inspection data and genetic analyses. Distribution is studied in collaboration with advisors and observations collected from farmers. Control methods are researched through field trials, focusing on target species such as cockspur grass and nightshades. To enhance the targeting of control measures, drone-based mapping of cockspur grass is being developed. The project generates knowledge that can be utilized in managing new harmful weed species.
