Traditionally, maps are based on visually interpreted and manually measured information represented with map symbols easily understandable to humans. Remote sensing provides raster images with plenty of useful and up-to-date information, which, however, is hard to compare with the original map data. By the use of advanced updating techniques and knowledge-based interpretation approaches, the Finnish Geodetic Institute aims at developing automatic methods to be used in the updating process. In many cases, the updating can be based on object-oriented change detection. Important subprojects are
- Knowledge-based methods for image interpretation
- Automatic methods for change detection and updating
- Use of laser scanning and aerial images in map updating
- Use of SAR images in map updating
