Finland is now building competitive advantage from data – National Land Survey of Finland at the core of geospatial data

With state-of-the-art scientific technology and practical support from the National Land Survey of Finland, Finland can build smarter infrastructure.

Neljä ihmistä istuu sohvalla, kahdella on kannettava tietokone. Kaikilla ihmisillä on päällään violetit hupparit.

Finland has emerged as a pioneer in geospatial data technology in a unique way, as the National Land Survey of Finland – in its roles as a registration authority, geospatial data researcher, and host of the Location Innovation Hub – offers the public sector and businesses the opportunity to utilise data in a new way.

- Highly accurate maps, laser scanning data, the cadastral register and other open geospatial data services create a common infrastructure that municipalities, the authorities and companies can use without heavy investments.

- This can be used as a foundation for better planning, security, and services throughout Finland, says Antti Jakobsson, Chief Engineer at the National Land Survey of Finland and Project Manager at the Location Innovation Hub.

From satellite positioning to three- and four-dimensional models

The National Land Survey develops solutions that improve the accuracy, reliability and automation of geospatial data – from satellite positioning to 3D/4D modelling and GeoAI, i.e. solutions for combining artificial intelligence and geospatial data.

- This content ensures that Finland remains at the forefront of development, and new technologies can be introduced quickly, Jakobsson says.

The Location Innovation Hub helps businesses and public organisations test geospatial data, data spaces and artificial intelligence in practice.

Virtual models enable data collection

Digital twins are virtual models that enable real-time data collection, analysis and simulation.

- When production, research and innovation services work together, the result is a rare combination: accurate data, cutting-edge scientific technology, and practical support for their utilisation.

- Thanks to this, Finland will be able to build even smarter infrastructure, and companies will be able to develop new services for the global market, Jakobsson explains.

With the aid of the Location Innovation Hub, research and open data produced by the National Land Survey of Finland can be turned into practical solutions for businesses.

The Location Innovation Hub is a centre of expertise for location information and technology, coordinated by the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute.
