FGI Research Seminar: Advancing Close-Range Forest Monitoring through Multi-Temporal Point Cloud Processing
This time Dr. Mariana Campos will present her topic “Advancing Close-Range Forest Monitoring through Multi-Temporal Point Cloud Processing.”
She will show how LiDAR time series can reveal new insights into forest dynamics, with a particular focus on detecting species-specific phenology patterns. The monitoring of these patterns can support investigations on how different species respond to climate change and how shifts in spring timing may influence forest functioning, including growth. She will also discuss LiDAR data-processing strategies designed to overcome the challenges involved on large, multimodal, and multi-temporal datasets with high spatial and temporal resolution.

FGI Research Seminar: Monitoring forest disturbances and crop traits via advanced drone remote sensing
This time our speaker is Dr. Raquel Oliveira. The topic of her presentation is “Monitoring forest disturbances and crop traits via advanced drone remote sensing.”
Climate change is driving major ecological shifts in forests and agriculture, from widespread bark beetle outbreaks to altered crop development. This seminar will present how advanced drone-based hyperspectral data can deliver comprehensive assessments of forest and crop conditions. This presentation is part of our special FGI Research Seminar Series – FGI Postdocs in the Spotlight, where our new Postdocs of the 3-year TULANET Postdoc program will present themselves and their work.Read moreRead more about FGI Research Seminar: Monitoring forest disturbances and crop traits via advanced drone remote sensing -

FGI Research Seminar: New methods to explore, share, and use different types of geospatial data
This week Dr. Mohammad Imangholiloo will give a presentation, where he will talk about new methods to explore, share, and use different types of geospatial data.
Today, geospatial data can appear in various forms—such as images, shape drawings (including points, lines, and polygons), or 3D point clouds. These 3D point clouds are becoming increasingly common, but they often come as extremely large files. Typically, users must download the entire dataset before they can work with it, which requires time and computing resources. Dr. Imangholiloo’s research focuses on developing new methods to explore and share this data online without the need to download everything first. By creating innovative tools and methods, he aims to make access faster and easier, enabling multiple users to interact with the data simultaneously. This research will support new technologies like digital twins and improve data-driven decision-making.

FGI Research Seminar: From FAIR to fAIr with CARE in spatial data and modeling
Our final speaker of the year is Dr. Blessing Kavhu. The topic of his presentation is “From FAIR to fAIr with CARE in spatial data and modeling”.
Dr. Kavhu will demonstrate how Large Language Models and open-source geospatial tools can accelerate the FAIRification of spatial data and models, making them more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable in spatial data infrastructures. He will also outline responsible implementation pathways guided by the CARE principles (Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, Ethics) to ensure equity, ethics, and community stewardship.
