LiDAR and Aids to Navigation

The objective of this project is to solve how well laser scanners work in maritime conditions detecting nautical signs, and how could different reflective materials improve the visibility of these signs.

Project aims to give clear picture of the suitability of the reflector materials currently used by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency especially for the commercial laser scanners operating in the infrared area. Another goal is to investigate what features in reflective materials or nautical signs could be improved for example in regards of wavelength range and reflection pattern. In addition, this project will determine the visibility of nautical signs as a function of weather conditions, distance, size, scanner characteristics and other similar factors in order to assess environmental impact of laser scanners.
