Map services for outdoor leisure activities supported by social networks (MenoMaps II)

In the project ’Map services for outdoor leisure activities supported by social networks’ (MenoMaps II) new possibilities for creating map-based leisure services for outdoor activities are investigated. The project is based on the results of the earlier MenoMaps project (2008-2010), funded by Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The aim of this earlier MenoMaps project was to carry out research on the utilisation of multipublishing method for the purpose of supporting outdoor activities. The main outcome of the project was a map-based service prototype with multipublishing channels, capable to deliver the same map data for the users via different media. In the MenoMaps II –project the map-based multipublishing service prototype is further developed. The prototype will be exhibited in the Nuuksio nature centre and also in the Töölö Sports Hall in Helsinki at the end of 2012. The different channels of the multipublishing service such as a multitouch display map, a mobile map application and a web application, are linked through the UpCode technology providing the user with a uniform use experience. Additionally, voluntary update of spatial data by social networks will be studied. The information of hiking paths and other features important to outdoor activities are in the focus of this study. In the MenoMaps II –project the possibilities for creating new business models for map services based on the multichannel techniques are also studied. Different kinds of development challenges are studied; such as: What kind of business possibilities are provided by the new interaction techniques of the map services? What kind of new use experiences and interaction possibilities the studied business models could provide for the design of the user interfaces? The project is carried out in co-operation between the Finnish Geodetic Institute, Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography, and the Aalto University, School of Art and Design, the Department of Design.
